MA/MFA Scenography exhibition 2021

Dench studio, CSSD

6th - 9th September

COLLECTIVE (PLAY)THINGS was an interactive installation investigating how play - seen as active corporeal engagement/exploration - can bring about a togethering of (people and) things.

The patchwork structure is comprised of dozens of sheets of paper, of an assorted size, each folded using a simple modular pattern which allows them to be joined together. These included a variety of discarded scrap papers of personal significance- polling cards, a traffic violation notice, lateral flow test slips etc - forming a motley physical record of the construction period. In addition, I led a series of online 1-to-1 paper folding workshops using similarly discarded pieces of once relevant paper. These were also incorporated into the structure.

The foot-pumps, whose concertinaed paper forms recall the folds atop the plinths, animated the paper structure when depressed by participants. When inflated, the structure adapts and unfolds in reaction to the air flow, perhaps revealing more of the former lives of the papers, which might otherwise be obscured by the folds when deflated.
